South Africa Wellness Tips: Sleep To Rhythms In the Key Of Life to Restore Your Wellness

4
Digg me

The French National Sleep Institute reports that the average person looses one and a half hours sleep daily and accumulates a sleep deficit of 5 years by the time they reach the age of 40 due to disruptions in our natural life rhythms which translates into sleep disorders like apnea, restles legs syndrome and restless  sleep patterns.

Who is to blame for this change in our biological clock  and what can we do to restore it?

Whether it is due to the somber economic outlook or not, the Blogosphere is abuzz about this topic, with stories ranging from universities seeking Military Veterans Who Have Problems Sleeping to study efficacy of remedies Mobiles Phone being Blamed for bedtime woes and Greek Insomniacs advised to wake up and seek medical help.

The British with their characteristic sense of humour simply Blame Electronics for the Insomnia pandemic and say that we can now happily diagnose a new disease for which some fine commercial entity might create a magical pill. Promoters of the Drive Alert, Arrive Safe campaign say that Insomnia, one of the most common sleep complaints has been linked to road accidents and that Better Sleep Could Cut Serious Road Accidents .

Live Well has commissioned a report which is alarmed by the fact that tiredness has become socially acceptable , which has spurned it to launch a new campaign aiming to raise awareness about the issue.

As if we need reminders, others state that Sleepless nights may be sign of serious problem, whether that is due to debt stress or weight gain .  Others write about  coffee’s well-documented side effects: anxiety, insomnia etc.  This sleep blues has even prompted one iPhone geek to develop an application to address the woes of Sleepless Babies.

The bad news is that our modern self-indulgent lifestyles represent the biggest risk to our health and wellness. We have lost sight of the very reason why nature provided for cycles, seasons and rhythms  as well as the fact that there is nothing accidental about the creation of  seasons or the daylight and night time cycle in the 24 hour day.

The initiated tell us that our The Biological Clock responds to environmental cues which tend to be at times longer and at other times shorter than the 24 hour cycle, hence the name Circadian Rhythms. The recent UC Irvine Breakthrough Discovery Revealed how circadian rhythms regulate energy on  cellular level.

These scientific reports illustrate the absolute importance of paying attention and aligning ourselves to biological cycles, natural seasons and  life rhythms to enhance our holistic wellbeing. As Jack Dejohnette, Jazz legend explained at the Jazz Expo at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, life is music and music is life - the two join together“. That’s may be also what musician Stevie Wonder had in mind with his experimental “Songs in the Key of Life” Album. The heart beats in the key of life, so is our rhythmic breathing and as the mentioned UC Irvine research shows, these  rhythms are hardwired in our DNA on a cellular level and regulate our energy levels. We feel tired when they are out of sync and feel on fire when they are perfectly in tune.

The good news is that we are in control. Rather - we can be in control if we want to do. We can rekindle the circuitry by adopting resourceful lifestylestyle practices like yoga breathing meditations, which align and bring our breathing and sleeping patterns in tune with natural life cycles, seasons and biological rhythms. Seasons, cycles and rhythms  are nature’s way of ensuring that every creative or expansive effort is interrupted and punctuated by a corresponding pause for recuperation,  for rest and rejuvenation in order to guarantee the sustained dynanism of the biological system.

Our modern and often unhealthy lifestyle choices impact upon and disturb these natural cycles and biological rhythms primed to take ques from our environment. The ques from our artificial lifestyle environments are confusing and contradictory to the biological clock.  We rationalize these erratic lifestyle practices  in terms of economic necessity, peer pressure to do things like staying late and consume substances because they are hip and cool.

Companies no longer set-up jobs where people live thus subjecting workers to long commutes to and back from work and extending the hours devoted work.  Over-saturated multi-channel entertainment options on new aggressive communications media encroach even further on our privacy and subject our biological systems to a non-stop barage of stimulation leaving no downtime for rest

Persistent productivity and performance (success) oriented pressures within families as well as work place breeds insecurity because of fears for not making the grade which is perceived like a death sentence  in a culture which recognizes and idolizes only winners.

The net effect of the disruption of our natural sleeping rhythms is that we accumulate not only a sleep deficit but also a health deficit as the quality of our health is preconditioned on the quality of our sleep. Statistics of the French National Sleep Institute show that Fourty percent of adults surveyed in France (predominantly women and those in the 45-55 age range) complain about an inability to fall asleep or sleep through at night. Take This Quiz to know how well you are doing on the sleep barometer.  The charts can tell whether you suffer from sleep apnea, insomnia or  any of the multiple sleep disorders.

Why should we be concerned about sleep deficiency?

We should be concerned because volumes of scientific evidence establish a direct causal relationship between poor sleeping patterns and poor health especially with regard to pathologies like obesity, diabetes, cardio vascular risks, allergies, stress, ADHD, depression, aging, longevity etc

There are many exhaustive Blogposts and articles offering Tips for Better Sleep to rejuvenate and restore a normal rejuvenating sleep rhythm – the following are therefore just a summary of lifestyle adjustments you could do to serve your own enlightened health and wellness cause:

  1. Schedule and maintain regular sleeping hours to get a minimum of 8 hours un-interrupted sleep – This advice holds true for kids as well as adults.
  2. Eat well for breakfast and lunch but enjoy light dinners at least 2 hours before bedtime to allow the digestive system to rest and consume less energy during sleep,
  3. Generally avoid any type of stimulant food or beverages after 3PM – These include your favourite Seattle company Café Latté, Alcohol, Vitamins or exotic beverages containing herbal stimulants;
  4. Avoid practicing any type of sporting activity after 8PM,
  5. If you have a life partner – go to bed at the same time or join your partner at the least before they fall asleep – research shows that a resisted or disturbed sleep cycle takes at least 90 minutes before it sets in or is restored,
  6. Obey your body and go immediately to bed when you feel tired - As said before research shows that resisting will delay falling asleep by another 90 minutes. You don’t want to fall asleep on the job during a Press Conference in front of the world’s press like the now famous ex Finance Minister.
  7. Maintain an optimized sleeping environment – A bed, mattress, pillows neutralizing magnetic radiation - confortable linnen - No TV in the bedroom – Temperature of approximately 18°C – Ensure sufficient obscurity in the bedroom. The biological system does many important life sustaining functions whilst we sleep like  the production of melatonin the feel good hormone. If your home was not designed by a Lifestyle Wellness Architect consult a Feng shui wellness professional regarding the flow of chi energy in your bedroom. You will be surprised by the difference a few re-arrangements could make to your sleep and life fortunes.
  8. Make up for lost sleep and restore vitality and peak performance by taking a daily power nap or siesta in the best Mediterranean tradition. Attention it ain’t no siesta if it exceeds 20minutes. The good and welcome trend is that companies in some countries now provide for a comfortable “lifestyle chill-out corner” with plants, hammock, chill-out music etc to replace the traditional “smoking corner” or reimburse staff for lunchtime “power nap” expenses at new lifestyle wellness businesses like Nick Ronco, the sleep revolutionary’s New York Yelo Power Nap Boutique, an idea which will certainly be copied at airports and cities across the world to sooth the sleeping woes of millions of global sleep deficient business and leisure travellers.
  9. Check out homeopathic solutions provided by your local Life Wellness Coach ,  mentor or practioner like Lavender for Mood Control and Insomnia , herb teas which invoke sensually entrained relaxation indicated for the various type of sleep disorders like snoring, apnea, nightmares, anxiety, restless sleep, restless leg syndome etc.
  10. Try out as well the numerous sleep and relaxation therapies offered by local natural remedies providers and practitioners such as Chiropractors or acupuncturist nearest to your place of residence or work, like lumino (light) therapy administered with the help of Luminettes [Lumi(er) + (lu)nette] or light colour spectra reflected off the walls of your room, office or treatment cubicle to create a luminous ambiance. There also other natural solutions  like  phytotherapy, aromatherapy, physiotherapy etc.

Yes its time to wake up and Tune Our Sleep Patterns to the Rhythms in the Key of Life in the interest of our 360wellness.

Perspectives on Personal and Collective Healing in South Africa

3
Digg me

Wikipedia defines « Healing, assessed physically, as the process by which the cells in the body regenerate and repair to reduce the size of a damaged or necrotic area. Healing incorporates both the removal of necrotic tissue (demolition), and the replacement of this tissue. »   It also says that the replacement can happen in two ways:

  • by regeneration: the necrotic cells are replaced by the same tissue as was originally there.
  • by repair: injured tissue is replaced with scar tissue.

Most organs will heal using a mixture of both mechanisms.

It acknowleges that this definition can be applied to other areas as well and states that « healing, assessed spiritually, emotionally, mentally or otherwise, is a process which involves more than just the action of cells. According to the Bible, Abraham, the father of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, healed a man named Abimelech, his wives and his maidservants throught prayer. The words heal, healed, and healing occur 132 times in the King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Bible. The Qur’an and the Torah also refer to the power of God to heal, as do the scriptures of other faith traditions. There are also non-believers who hold that healing is the result or more than just the action of cells on their own, and may be the result of thought, energy, etc. Those who believe in healing through more than purely physical means don’t generally use the term faith healing in reference to the practice, but some information about it’s advantages and criticisms may be found at the link below ».

The Messy British Row … To Have Or not Have A Chocolate Tax

2
Digg me

Dr. David Walker, the Scottish GP from Lanarkshire has  provoked with his medical colleagues, the media and the chocoholic fans, mostly women across the entire UK and beyond a messy row about to have have or not to have  a Chocolate Tax.  They are furious at the scotsman for his proposal at this weeks British Medical Association (BMA) conference in Clydebank,West Dunbartonshire, to introduce of all things, “a chocolate health tax”. All of this with the justification that it would cut rising levels of obesity amongst the British population. Needless to say that the Conference roundly shot down this mischievous  proposal categorized by his colleagues, the industry, the media and die hard choco fans as “utterly idiotic”, “stupid”, “ridiculous” etc.

In what it calls a “bittersweet victory”,  The Herald reports that for Scottish Family doctors - ‎”It was as tempting as a box of chocolates.” And they  “almost succumbed to the quick fix of a health tax on chocolate as a means of tackling the increasing ill-health resulting from over consumption”. Find below a sampling of the tsunami of responses provoked by the Scottish GP’s proposal:

Is this a perfect example of a storm in a chocolate cup - or has the doctor opened up a can full with taboos that we don’t want to face up to. Weigh in and share your opinions on the issue.  don’t forget to Digg. Don’t forget to check back soon.

Who Needs a Life Wellness Coach in South Africa?

Who needs a  life wellness coach in South africa?

Who needs one? A life coach helps you get from where you are to where you want to be.

How? By helping you define goals and devise a strategy to achieve them. Life wellness coaches don’t provide you with answers – instead they ask questions that help you find the answers yourself.

People often consult a life coach after a traumatic experience but anyone who wants guidance in making changes or going for a goal can benefit from this service.

How do you choose one? There are many different schools and styles but the profession is still self-regulated and it’s possible to offer life coaching without any qualification.

To be safe, ensure your coach is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF) or a member of the Coaching and Mentoring Association of South Africa (Comensa).

How much will it cost? From R2 500 to R5 000 a month (one session a week). The coaching period also varies but 12 weeks is typical.

The financial coach
Who needs one? A financial coach can help you implement a plan for escaping debt, mapping your financial future and avoiding behaviour that compromises your financial security.

If your financial circumstances change suddenly or if you’re not sure how to invest a sudden windfall, you may also benefit from this form of coaching.

Because it’s fee-based, financial coaching is generally more objective than the free advice you’d receive from someone connected to a financial institution who hopes you’ll buy one of its products.

How do you choose one? Ideally a financial coach should have a post-graduate degree or diploma in financial planning that qualifies him or her for accreditation as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) – the highest internationally recognised qualification for financial planners

Also, make sure your coach is a Comensa member and isn’t linked to any financial institution.

How much will it cost? R400 to R500 an hour.

The health and wellness coach

Who needs one? A health and wellness coach aims to help you set both short-term and long-term health goals and implement a strategy to achieve them.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting information on fitness, health and nutrition or if you need motivation in meeting a health-related goal (such as losing weight, quitting smoking or managing a chronic condition), this service can be particularly useful.

How do you choose one? There are no set qualifications but many health and wellness coaches are qualified doctors or have training in complementary medicine or nutrition.

How much will it cost? Because this field is so wide and some coaches are highly qualified specialists, costs vary enormously. Expect to pay anything from R350 to R1 500 an hour and up to R8 000 a session for extremely specialised service.

The executive coach

Who needs one? Executive coaching clients are often leaders and managers who want to find inspiration, develop themselves and their performance or simply create a more balanced lifestyle.

But people at all levels of an organisation who want to work more effectively and build a better quality of life can benefit from executive coaching.

Tools such as personality profiles and emotional intelligence testing often provide the starting point for this form of coaching.

How do you choose one? Executive coaches are frequently appointed by large companies to work with senior managers.

They’re often trained in psychology, but some have business qualifications (such as an MBA) or are themselves successful former executives or entrepreneurs. Several business coaches are registered at Comensa.

How much will it cost? From R300 to R1 000 for a 45-minute session.

Check your coach
Comensa is a body formed by coaching professionals to set standards for the industry. When you select a Comensa member you can be assured that your coach’s qualifications have been scrutinised and that he or she is committed to a code of ethics.

Be aware that you don’t need a tertiary qualification to become a coach. Coaches are also not regulated by a health professionals’ council.

People without any training in nutrition, psychology or medicine could dispense unscientific advice without fear of being struck off a roll. Ask your coach about the specific training he or she has received.

For more info and a list of coaches visit www.comensa.org.za.

Discovery Health has launched the Health Journalism Excellence Awards with R275 000 in prize money for outstanding health reporting. Discovery Health has launched the Health Journalism Excellence Awards in South Africa, with R275 000 in prize money to journalists for outstanding health reporting. These are the first awards dedicated to the field of health in South Africa, says Neville Koopowitz, CEO of Discovery Health.

Health reporting is said to be particularly challenging in terms of advancing public understanding of health care, as it is a diverse field involving a complex range of issues or debates covering finance, economics, ethics, clinical policy, science, wellness, medical technology, research, and the human experience.

“Discovery recognises that it takes skill and expert knowledge to get a medical or health economics story right and convey it to the public in such a manner that it is factually correct whilst still accessible and understandable,” noted Koopowitz.

“Excellent health reporting is a crucial public service and we believe in the integrity of fair and well researched articles. With these awards we aim to recognise and reward journalists and media professionals who set the reporting benchmark in the industry.”

The Discovery Health Journalism Excellence Awards are open to any journalist reporting in the health field, working for a print or broadcast media house in South Africa. There are nine categories, of which eight categories receive R25 000 each and an overall Health Journalist of the Year winner will receive R75 000 in prize money.

The awards are open to journalists, columnists and reporters who work in print and broadcast media, covering a broad spectrum of health and healthcare topics. Stories published between January 2008 and December 2008 will be eligible for the competition, and entries must be received by the competition closing date of 16 February 2009.

“An independent panel of health and media experts will review the entries and the winners will receive their awards at a gala event during the first half of 2009,” added Koopowitz.

The categories are:

  1. Best health news reporting
  2. Best healthy lifestyle feature
  3. Best investigative reporting
  4. Best analysis and commentary writing
  5. Best radio health journalism
  6. Best television health journalism
  7. Best trade publication health journalism
  8. Best health economics journalism
  9. Discovery Health Journalist of the Year

Entries can be submitted by, post or hand delivery to Discovery’s Sandton office for the attention of Allim Milazi, head of Discovery media relations. Email entries must be sent to journalismawards@discovery.co.za. Journalists making broadcast entries should present copies of their work with a transcript. Guidelines, rules and more information can be found on the Discovery website.
